Venice, Italy | Castello

Venice is an extremely controversial place to live in. I have always loved the city where I was born and have grown up, but I confess that sometimes I do ask myself what I'm still doing here...

so I go out and wander through its streets, looking for what NYT journalist Jason Horowitz (read article) described as a semblance of normal life.

Early in the morning and late at night....

Venice, Italy | Castello
Venice, Italy | Soranzo Van Axel Palace
Venice, Italy | Castello
Venice, Italy | Bridge of Sighs

Venice, Italy | Riva degli Schiavoni
Venice, Italy | Castello
Venice, Italy | Castello

... and I think I understand.

I just got back to NY after a week in Venice (and a month traveling around Italy). Your post is a validation of what I perceived as the magic of Venice. Between 6:00 and 8:00 every morning, the city was filled with enough silence to 'hear' the history and stories of yesteryears and all those who walked those alleys before us. People asked why I wanted to spend a whole week in Venice; finding the magic in the early-morning quiet normalcy answered those questions. Now back in the U.S., I find my spirit renewed and in search of the hidden magic of NY, undoubtedly buried somewhere deep beneath its hustle and bustle.
